Analog Collage
Winter 2022 - present
My current work consists of analog collage. I didn’t have an Aha! moment and purposely shift from watercolors to collage. Instead, while out of the country, I did have an AC unit break down and leak, then puddle water over a year’s worth of work. I was drained and didn’t possess a good attitude to try and make something new of the ruined work.
I indulged the vintage-lover voice within and started collecting old magazines and books then started cutting, cutting, cutting. Slowly random compositions would come to mind and I felt like my 8-year-old self who loved putting puzzles together. I have an idea of what I want to create but per usual for me, the process shapes the final image. Negative space is considered as much, if not more, than positive space, and to this end I set out to find the blackest black paint in the world. The work I create is 2/3 imagination fun land and 1/3 inspired by current socio-economic-political topics or emotional nostalgia.
